shift cable adjustment

Gotta a problem with my shift cable adjustment for my Merc 3.0L Alpha One. I just installed a new shift cable and I adjusted the cables per the instructions on this site and my manual (checked and rechecked). When I shift it in forward the cutout switch is perfectly aligned, but when I shift in reverse the cutout swith is engaged and the engine dies. I've adjusted the control cable both directions and it doesn't seem to help. As I tighten it in, the cutoff switch gets out of alignment in forward gear. I can only seem to get it right in one gear or the other. Where have I gone wrong?

Re: shift cable adjustment

i would try to adjust the cutout switch itself, all the cables are different lengths, by a little bit. if you cannot adjust it correctly with the cable, then try adjusting the switch! good luck

Re: shift cable adjustment

Boomer

Its likely a problem with your upper cable adjustment.

Start again. Disconnect everything. Set the adjustable pin to the lowest position as in the manual.

Adjust your lower cable by pushing it in and turning the prop ccw until it locks. Set the barrel eye distance to 6 inches as in the manual and install it onto the shift plate. Keep a VERY light push on the cable end to take up slack when doing this.

Place the throttle box into FULL forward, all the way forward. Align the barrel and eye with the shift plate, apply a slight pull on the cable end to take up slack. Everything should work, according to the book anyway, you need may to do the seat of the pants tweak.

If you get the same symptoms, means your Upper Cable is to biased towards the reverse position - too long. Shorten it by turning the eye adjustment. Do this one or 2 turns each time and test. If the problem occurs in the forward position, the upper cable is too short.

If the reverse cannot engage fully, adjust the cable eye pin vertical position.

Good luck.

Re: shift cable adjustment

are you setting up the shift switch with the boat in the water? it will act different when checked under load as opposed to on land.

These can drive you batty. If you get it to where forward is okay, let it stall in reverse. Then find the cable end that is mounted on the stud in an adjustable slot.Loosen the stud, and slide it in the slot, until the interupter switch centers in the vee.
cut out switch = interupter switch
DHP
