Shift arm doesn't engage the intermediate shaft, Mercruiser 120, #1

Mercruiser 120, lower unit # 2650386<br />I replaced the water pump and the shift bushing on the lower unit. After reasembling the unit and replacing it on the boat the shift arm doesn't engage the intermediate shaft.<br />I did pull the shift shaft out to inspect it also.<br />What did i do wrong or leave out to cause this problem????

I replace my water pump about a month ago. I went to (sterndrives.com) to get info on how it is done. One thing that come to mind is the unit must be in forward when you put it back togather. You have to hold pressure on the prop to keep it in gear. If I were you I would check out this site and read through the procedure for replacing the water pump.<br /><br />Good luck
