shift and throttle cables

Just changed the control box and cables from 1979 johnson 70 hrs to my 1975 50 hrs evinrude. The wireing harness was the same. Starts up just fine. Just need to no the best way to clean the throttle and shifter cables to get a nice smooth shift on the control box Their pretty tight. Reverse is smooth but forward is very tight. Any thing would help. Thanks for any response

you can try to grease the cables a little, but most of the time they will have to be replaced. inside the control box and inside the outboard you should see the inner cable going into the casing, try to clean there. mine were tough and new cables solved the problem as there is a lot of lenght you cannot get to

I went from an 88hp, 1988 Johnson to a 200hp, 1976 Evinrude. The cables all hooked up, albeit a little tight at the engine. After numerous problems with throttle response I found out that the cables changed in 1979. So I need to get new cables. So I did, along with the connection kit to the engine. I don't know if I also need a pre '79 control box or not. Maybe this helps you.

Make sure there are no sharp bends in the cables. Also, have as few bends as possible. S-curves should be avoided if possible. All that stuff makes for stiff cables and poor response. OK, some boats make it impossible to get it "right". In that case, do the best you can and live with it.
