sharpen SS prop question...

Quick question, I had a 3 blade SS prop recently sharped up, however, it appears when looking at the blades only the left side of the blades were sharped which in operation would only effect the reversing operations. The longer right sides of each blade remained rounded aka appeared not to be sharped. Since the prop rotates right (normal operation) I would have thought the right sides would be sharped like the left. Any help appreciated. Thanks

Re: sharpen SS prop question...

What kind of boat is this? If it's anything remotely recreational, this does not sound safe at all...razor blades at the toes? If out of water on the trailer you can get razor blades on the shins or knees...

But I have no idea what your application is.

I've heard of remote control boats using this trick, and I've heard of 80 to 100 mph racing boats do this as well. But I've never heard of anyone doing this or benefiting from it on any other "normal" boat....

It does sound rather backwards to me...sharpen the leading edge is more conventional, not the trailing edge as you are describing. Was this done by a prop shop?

The whole idea just sounds strange to me and a bit dangerous.

Re: sharpen SS prop question...

This is on a 21ft boat mercruise drive inboard. Yes, seems the trailer edge was sharpened but not the leading edge. and, yes was done by a well known shop. But, it just doesn't make sense to me... I'm rather ignorant on the subject but was hoping for some insight...

Re: sharpen SS prop question...

i don't think you send your prop to get sharpened... you get it balanced. Most blades are cupped and the specific profile of the prop would be comprised if ground down. However if checked for balance, they can remove material from the trailing edge without messing with the computer designed blades... with no effect. Hope this helps.
