Shareware/free utilities???

The internet is full of little programs to do this or that. Most are freebies. What is the motivation of people who write these? Is there somewhere that they are recouping costs that does not meet the eye?<br /><br />I have an idea for a windows based backup utility that I know would go over big. But it would cost me to have it developed and I would like to recoup the cost and maybe make something on it.
