Am in the market for a new 25 - 30 HP outboard for my 15 ft Aluminum boat. Should I look for a short or a long shaft motor.
Thanks

Re: shaft length

Measure from the top of the transom to the bottom of the boat and this should come close to a shaft length. ie: 15 or 20 Inches are normal shaft lengths. The cavitation plate should be at a line even with the bottom of the boat. So the measurement that is important is the distance on the motor is from the top of the bend in the transom bracket to the top of the cavitation plate. Or easier yet ask the boat Manufacturer what length engine shaft.

Re: shaft length

thanks kart33. I'll measure. The boat is a real old one (doesn't leak), manufacturer is probably out of business. Saw some 25 HPs on the internet from a place in UTAH that are a year old, rechecked, and will come with a warranty. They're about 1699 bucks. May go that route.
Sal C
