Shaft Extension Kit for Nissan 5hp Four Stroke

Greetings,

I had a Nissan 5hp four stroke which I need to replace. I had bought an extension kit for it and had it installed, but cannot recall whether the extension, which I believe added 5 inches, was for the short (15 inch) or long (20 inch) version of this outboard. I no longer have the paperwork/details for the original motor, unfortunately. I heard somewhere that the extension is only made for the long (20 inch) model. If this is true, then my question is answered. Can anyone confirm that the extension kit for the Nissan 5hp four stroke is only for the 20 inch version? Thanks.

Welcome to Iboats

Yes the kit is S to L or viceverse, no XL size available for this model.

No, Luis. There are currently 2 versions of the sail pro... L and XL... Depends on what the "kit" was, and the vintage of the motor. NSF/MFS4/5/6C models come with S or L housings, and then you add an extension for UL. Earlier models all came S, and then you added the L extension kit; XL was not available back then. Cost of the motor (new) in any version version is about the same.... coupla dollars more for the longer models. Best way to determine which model is needed is by measuring the boat. For sail applications, XL is almost always best, because you get fewer occurrences of ventilation when the boat hobby-horses. Likewise, 6 hp is always the best value of the 4/5/6, as long as the boat is rated for it.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply, pvanv. I actually managed to get a response from the folks who sold me the extension, and they said it was to extend the L to XL @ 25". Now my question is whether the Tohatsu 6hp 25" 2015 is the same or as good as the Nissan 6hp 25" 2015 now that Nissan is out of the outboard business, leaving it to the parent Tohatsu. Apparently the Nissan 2015 is extremely hard to find nowadays.

It's the same engine with a custome on it, both runs at 5000-6000 wot rpm. Much better is the 6 HP Sailpro, has charging system and cable and high thrust prop factory delivered. Why did you need to convert a L into a XL model, will engine be pushing something big or large ?

Sea Rider, I don't. I was just trying to determine what length shaft I had on my no longer extant 5hp. I plan on getting either the Nissan or Tohatsu 6hp "Sail Pro," which it seems is just the 25" model. If the Nissan and Tohatsu 6hp are identical but for the label on the hood, and the Nissan can't be had for love or money, I'll get the Tohatsu. The question is, can the Nissan "hood" still be found for sale now that "Nissan Marine" is out of business?

But not cheap..A replacement cowl has an MSRP over $200. You must specify which style (internal/external or external-only fuel tank), and which brand decals (Tohatsu or Nissan). Of course, you can just order decals. :)

Yep, don't know why cowls are so darn expensive, just push a button and a machine does lots in just one minute.. Most engine brands are the direct culprit that cowl black market is flourishing due to their astronomical out of this world cowl prices.
