Shaft conversion

I am in the market for a short shaft 2.5 or 3.5 tohatsu and I found a long shaft on Craigslist. I was wondering if it is possible to convert one of these to a short shaft or is it more work than it would be worth? Motor is a 2004 2 stroke.

Re: Shaft conversion

Welcome to Iboats,

Conversion is too costly, much cheaper is to install a transom mount or mini jack. Anyway a 2.5-3.5 is for displacement, fast displacement only. Which boat type and lenght do you plan to install it on ?

I plan on using the motor on an inflatable dinghy for my sailboat.

Re: Shaft conversion

You will be cheaper off finding a short model, or a short donor motor with a blown power head. The cost of the driveshaft, water pipe, and shift linkage (if a B model) will be close to the cost of the whole motor.

Modifying the transom jack height may be another option... but keep in mind that many dinghy transoms are already low even for a short motor. In my case, with a Walker Bay 8' dinghy (actually the WB 275 RID -- tube accessory added), a short motor needs almost 2" of extra transom height. If I were to try a long shaft motor, that would be almost 7" to raise the motor. Quite a job on my boat!
