This is a 1973 6 hp Evinrude Fisherman. 2 cyl/2 stroke. 6302SJ

I bought used (my first); started last nite.
Ran well but I didn't get motor low enough in the water; we'll say 10 min or less at idle/ varied throttle. When I began to notice smoke I realized what I had done wrong.
Shut it down; let it cool some; then raised the level. Below the powerhead was too warm to leave your hand on though not too hot to touch.
Motor started 2nd pull today; though a little smoky. (30:1 fyi)
Question 1:
"Did I hurt the motor? How would I know if I had?"

Also -The motor has no kill switch but does die when you turn grip towards stop. Motor dies at "slow" not "stop"

Question 2: "Is this right ? if not how do I adjust/ What is correct idle speed?"

Question 3: "How smooth should it run? Should it shiver at low speeds?" "How much?"
Sure would appreciate help.
-br

Re: Several Evinrude 6hp questions.

you may want to replace the water impeller now.

You should be able to adjust the throttle so it shuts off at stop, but so long as it shuts off ans you are still able to get full throttle out of it I wouldnt mess with it. Atlest this way you can shut it off if you get it so it idles too fast it may not shut off.

Mine idles smooth at idle with out shivering. You might have to adjust the idle screw on the top front of the carb

That litte 73 fisherman is a great motor. If you take a clouse look at carb, you will notice a small retainer nut around the low speed adjustment needle. The gasket behind tends to dry out in 20-30 year, thus they later replaced them with neoprene gaskets. Try to tighten the retainer nut till tight ( dont be violent ) and release it a bit. Now it will draw gas instead of false air. That will allow it to iddle at lower rpm. Adjusting iddle and low speed micture with the boat in water, moving foreward in gear is a must to get the right iddle. Turn needle gently in to it barely touches seat (DONT TIGNTEN) Back out 1 1/2 turn. Warm motor up and run WOT for at least 1 - 2 min. Now let it pull boat in forward, iddle. Turn needle in in turns of 1/8 turn and let motor recover. When it starts to miss, sneeze or die, best setting is within 1/4 turn out from there.

1. This has a lean rich adjustment on the front of the motor. (1-9)Is this what you mean for me to adjust?

2. Also where do I adjust the throttle?

3. Please elaborate about why I want to replace impeller.

4. Fellows are you saying I hurt the motor?
-br

I dont think you hurt it, iddling. The lean/rich adjustment only allows you to adjust it within 1/4 turn. Remove hood, pull the little plastic link of needle and turn it with a plier or something. The impeller should be replaced every other year, and especially if it ran dry at some time. Below the cowling, on port side, there is a gear, turning with the tiller. It has a stop screw in it, to adjust against an iddle stop.

Re: Several Evinrude 6hp questions.

Hi, I'm not sure what you did wrong. Did you run it for 10 minutes with the water below the level of the water intake? That is run it without water pumping through it?

If so, that's why you'd need to change the impeller now. They are rubber and turn in a metal cup. Without water they overheat and burn up/break apart in seconds (for sure it'll need replacing if its run for a couple minutes).

By the way, outboards tend to run "smokey" when run in a barrel or something like that. I think it's just the confined space and that you're watching the exhaust more than when it's on a boat.

Watch how it runs when it gets hot... motors of that age can have bad/cracked ignition coils (under the flywheel) that may start to short out once they get hot... it might at first glance look like a fuel problem. It's just something to watch out for.

Hope that helps.

This is what an impeller looks like after it has been ran dry.
notice time frame mods I know this is big so I will leave it for 24 hrs and then remove

Re: Several Evinrude 6hp questions.

Let me explain.
I ran it with only tiny droplets of water coming out of the water hole. (Like the size of tears)
I revved it up and down trying to get a feel for the motor runnability.

Then I noticed the motor smoked more and began to smell hot.About 8-10 minutes time. I heard water hiss when I shut it down.

I shut it down and let it cool.
I restarted it with a hose/clamp arrangement pumping water under force in the water intake. The water became cool coming out; initially
The force of the water coming out of the hole in the back was sort of like when you spit water in the sink. Not a solid column but not drops either.

I will look for the stop screw on the throttle.
I appreciate the photos.
How do I inspect the impeller gear?

-br
