I want to check/set the timing on my Mercury 175 oil injected/carbureted outboards but can’t find a dial indicator. Is there another way to set the # 1 piston to top dead center without having to buy this tool (especially since it’s just for a one-time use)? Thanks.

Re: Setting Timing

Make sure the switch is off and pull the plug in the #1 cylinder. Insert a pencil (eraser side first) into the spark plug hole and gently turn the flywheel over. When the pencil reaches as far out as it goes, you are at TDC. Go back and forth a couple times to be certain. It will be easier to turn over if you pull all the plugs...

Kev_alask***

Thanks Kev! I've actually been considering doing something similar to that.

Where in AK?

Michaelb
