Hello I am working on a 1971 Evinrude 40hp twin. I cant seem to find any timing marks on the flywheel or in fact any method of adjustment??
Not actually had it running yet but can get pops and bangs. woodruf key is inplace on the flywheel so no way of adjusting that.
really puzzled as to how you set the timing up. Could it be that the throttle set up has some effect on the advance or retard.

Any help welcome

Thanks Craig

just thought I'd add some photos of the Old Girl that the engine will go on when both are finished!!

Basicly the timing is controlled by the point setting, make sure the points are in good shape and adjusted properly. Make sure the carb linkage is adjusted properly on the throttle cam and you should be good to go.

I am sure it has been discussed here at one time or another, if you run a search you will probably find some posts about it. Basically you want the carb linkage to start moving when the roller on the carb linkage is aligned with the mark on the throttle cam. Does that make any sense to you?
