Ok, nobody laugh. I'm used to points and condensers. Now I have a '90 3.0 litre Mercruiser and hopefully tomorrow night will need to put the motor back together after a teardown.

This motor is the "distributorless" ignition system, but has a component that fits where the distributor would ordinarily fit. This component has the worm type gear that a normal distributor would have, but only has a couple of wires coming out the top.

Does anybody know the procedure for re-installing this? Is the timing an issue? This component does have an alignment mark, but I don't know what it aligns with. Any tech tips would be much appreciated!
