Re: Servicing OMC Outdrive

You fill from the bottom to insure as the level increases in the drive, it moves air up. If you just dump it in from the top, you run the risk of trapping an air bubble in a cavity in your outdrive. Since the gear oil is fairly thick, this can give you an incorrect false full.

Start engine have a good day out on the water, the gear level drops to displace the air and you burn up your gears.

The oil is any 80/90 wt or stright 90 wt. The grease is a good bearing grease. I don't think you need any special tools. When you refill it, make sure you refill from the middle hole and pump it in slowly so as not to create any air pocket. Also, when refilling have the dipstick at the top unscrewed and when you see it over flow from there you have enough.

Fill from the middle, never the top or air will be a real problem.

This is incorrect info and will cause damage to your drive if followed. This is a Stringer drive not a Cobra! There is an upper and a lower gearcase and you fill from the bottom drain hole for each section. Read the manual before you do anything is my advice.

Sorry, I misread - bruce is correct.
I do agree about picking up a manual and reading it before messing around with stuff. It's always a good idea when you don't understand something.
