Anyone know of any service life figures for the TLDI engines? Either published or anecdotal? Elvin?

I ususally hear Elvin quote 4000-5000 hours before a rebuild...

At about 300 so far on mine....flawless...

It's really hard to wear out a 2-stk....having said that, 3000 to 3500. Maybe a little more, maybe a little less, depending on a lot of factors. There's a bunch of slide-ruler types from Japan here at the Miami show, so I will ask them tomorrow if they have managed to wear out any of the old test engines from four years ago.

As it turns out....the longest running one has close to 3000 hours an is still running. No one has managed to wear one out yet. But, they figure a service life of 3000 to 3500 is in the "normal range"

Sure, over the last five years, all over the world, there have been some that developed problems....but, the failure rate is statistically insignificant. They really managed to avoid the problems that plagued everyone else's developmental process of direct injection. I think that it was because they really take the time to test and do not rush anything into production that has problems. All the other manufacturers are always trying to be "first" to come out with "the best new system". Tohatsu is content to be "last" to release designs....as long as they work.

Re: service life of Tohatsu TLDI?

Elvin, thanks for your input. In your response above you said that it is really hard to wear out a 2 stroke. By saying that are you inferring that it is not that hard to wear out a 4 stroke? In the boatbuilding internet club I belong to, the age-old 2 stroke vs 4 stroke debate rages on, fueled by anecdotal evidence such as the Hondas run by the guides on the Colorado River getting 8,000 hrs before rebuild, etc. I always tout my Tohatsu 90 tldi as the lightest, most economical, most fuel efficient motor for the type boats we build. The other side proclaims the Yamaha 4s 100 because it's a 4 stroke and therefore will outlast the 2 stroke. Longevity is the only argument they have left after I reported my operating numbers. Any thoughts on 2 stroke vs 4 stroke longevity?

Thanks

John, nice job on the Bateau! Let me guess...flyfishing for stripers? That's what I "attempt" to do most of the time, usually out of Pine Point where I buy the season's launching permit. I also go to Sebago occasionally for swimming/skiing the few times the kids are around.

I got the trailer from the Venture dealer in Kittery. Ken didn't sell that model, and when I bought the trailer, I didn't even know he sold trailers.

We'll have to get together come springtime. If you're serious about a larger boat, I can show you my Tolman plans.

Here are some pics of my boat in action:
http://groups.msn.com/bricog/cascobaytour.msnw?albumlist=2

Jim

I have never launched from pine point, how is the fishing there usually? Fished by land not by boat. I always worried about the size of my boat I guess and the shallow areas. I will have to call around for trailer prices, I am kinda debating on if I even should bother with a new one since I want another boat already! Great looking boat you have, nice pictures.

We should get together at some point your right, cant wait for spring...

-John

Two-stroke verus four-stroke....the short answer is a four-stroke, in a perfect world, should last longer. In the real world....thinking in terms of maintainance, enviroment, and my personal dislike for four-strokes....they are probably equal in terms of how long they will last before they become "worn out" "Worn out" meaning wearing out of spec in regards to powerhead components.

Careful Elvin- I agree with you completely- but I suspect you are about to open the usual can of worms... :p
