You guys were great in helping me date my HD2.5 Johnson. Having problems find service info and part numbers and availability. I'm sure I will at least have to replace the impeller if I can find one. Bought the Clymers "old motors" manual but frankly, it sucks. Not complete and goes back only as far as 1955. Don't want to go against Steelespike's advice about trying to work on an outboard without a manual. Please, can anyone give me some advise?
Bob

Hi Bob
I can help you with part #s. I also understand the problem with not having a manual. I don't know of any after market books that cover this model. How ever you may find find a copy of a motor manual at the public library. You may have to look in the reference sec, or out dated materials sec. You may find a book that briefly covers your model or just hits the high points. Fortunately these are very basic units so the high points may be enough to get you by. The most important thing is to be gental taking the thing apart. Carb, ignit parts and some of the plumbing can be sencitive. If you post you email address I will send you the part #s for the entire machine. I will also try to answer or explain any questions you may have. Most of these motors,if they are anywhere near fair condition can be made ready to run with a minium of parts. Just clean out the tank and carb. Carefully remove the points clean the contacts and the little bake-a-lite sticks that actuate them. Reinstall and adjust. Change the gear oil and your ready to go. Also be carefull with the cork float in the carb, if they are not shot already, they can be very fragil. One more word of advice, this goes for all older motors, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Don't take anything apart unless you have to,to make the repair.

Re: Service info, old SeaHorse

Thank you Alcan. My e-"dress is: dpearse243847MI@comcast.net. I havn't started tearing into it yet; waiting on good advise such as yours. For my own peace of mind, I know I will replace the impeller. I could use that part number if possible. Probably will be disassembling the carb - tended to bog down under wot and needed the primer/rich-lean control pumped to restore power. Can the cork float be hand fashioned if needed?
Thank you - Bob

Hi Bob
Any part can be reproduced by hand, given enough time and will power. How ever finding a new one (nos) would be a lot easier and better. The empeller is driven of the propshaft, it is an excentric wobbler type. Most of the time they do not need replacing. How ever an inspection would be prudent. There is a cover behind the prop. remove the three screws in it and you are there. An impact driver can be helpful in removing the screws. If you do not yet have this tool, practice with it a little first. These tools are not very expencive as tools go. I have been using mine 25-30 yrs now.
