I was almost gave my pride and joy and painfully frustrating 1989 Kenner with a 1989 Evinrude 90 hp formerly VRO. My sister got engaged to a fishaholic and they bought a new boat the before mentioned boat had set up for several years then they went out a couple of times in it and they left it in the yard for almost 2 years and she sold it to me for 500 dollars. I took it home not knowing much about boats but, knew it was my passion to be on the salt water every spare minute I have. The boat had a small hole where someone had ran it up on the concrete boat ramp and it had been setting in the yard for the 2 yrs. I immediately fiberglassed the hole and bought carburetor cleaner, fuel stabilizer, etc... I watched several YouTube videos on how to clean a boat motor that had been setting up for a lengthy time. I got the motor running really good and the boat would crank the first time I turned the key every time. I live 5 minutes from a boat landing and rushed the boat into the river and it cranked right up but, I went to turn the steering wheel and it was stuck turned all the way to the right. I ended up having to replace the steering cable and helm also had to buy a new motor support tube. I am disabled and live month to month therefore the fix took several months as I had been struck by the boating and fishing dream very, very, severely. I spent every spare dollar I had to totally redo my boat and buy fishing tackle, rods, reels etc. I worked on the boat for a few months and it turned out fantastic. I lived and breathed nothing but the boat and fishing. I finally got to go salt water fishing and my dream was now reality all my hard work and Raman noodle meals were worth it. After fishing a couple of hours I went to go to another fishing spot and my worst nightmare happens my power trim just stopped working now it is stuck down and I bought a new up and down switch and all that it does is make a clicking noise when I press the button. I have located the position of the clicking noise on the back of the motor in a square box with the trim wires running into it BUT, I do not know the part name. I wrote down the part number 58310 609 WMX and I have done everything I can think of to find the part but I am not able to find it. I NEED HELP FINDING THE PART NAME PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS FRUSTRATING PROBLEM. ALL INPUT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED. SINCERELY,

Power trim quit I can't find the name of the part

My power trim stopped working on my 1989 Evinrude 90 hp VRO and I can't find the part name. I bought a new switch but!, when I press the button a click comes from a small box on the top of the back of the motor where my power trim wires all connect to different studs with nuts on the left and right in the box it also has 2 little square fuse looking things at the very top of the little box above the wires running left and right to the studs with the nuts. I apologise if I am making this hard to understand but, I am frustrated trying to find the part name. PART HAS THIS NUMBERS AND LETTERS 58310 609 WMX any help would be greatly appreciated.. Sincerely, Steve S.(Savannah Steve)

Most likely a solenoid (remote switch) issue. This reverses the trim motor to make the trim go up or down. these get corroded when sitting out. Make sure all connections are clean and corrosion free. most mechanics are capable of jumping these to test them. not expensive to replace maybe a friend who is nearby could help you test them.

Just go to a local auto parts store. A local one, not a national brand. The local one will have a parts guy professional, the national brand will have a $12/hr kid who doesn't know what a relay is. Tell them you just need two relays. Might as well replace them both. They should be no more than $14 each. Johnson will sell you them for much much more. They are all made in the same place these days. Pop the old ones out and the new ones in.

On second thought, in 89 that may be a different TNT wiring....if you dont see two of those little relays disregard above.
I think the cover comes off the box you see and the relays are inside it. I dont see too many of those old ones anymore.

Nope jake has the correct one for an 89 model. In the box mounted between the cylinders are the 2 relays. Take the 2 screws out and take the old out and put the new in.

Don't be throwing parts at the engine... diagnose it first... that's why we're here.

The two little fuse things you mentioned are PTT relays... one for UP... one for DOWN. When you encounter a problem where the unit will go one way and not the other, the proper thing to do is to switch the present relays.... and then... if the problem reverses itself... you obviously have one bad relay.

I apologise for not getting back to you sooner. The motor will not go either way up or down andthank you for the word that I could not get to go to my mind relay . I am trying to find out what to try and look for and where to look for a relay ???? For a 1989 Evinrude 90 hp VRO

Thank you for all for your replies. I went back out to the boat and started to remove the relays and I started to disconnect one of the plug ins on the relays and found one of the wires were completely broke out of one side of the plug. Therefore I will work on that broken wire and go from there diagnosing after I fix the broken wire but, hopefully that will take care of the problem.again thanks for your replies they helped tremendously. Sincerely, Steve S

Yeah... a broken wire would do it. You now state that the unit does not tilt in either direction... It's very unlikely that both relays would go bad at the same time... more likely that the broken wire resulted in a "No Voltage" problem.

Fixed power trim Thanks for the input how I fixed it

I was surely going to order new relays but thankfully I could not find the exact relays. I took the advice of the person who messaged don't go throwing parts at it keep diagnosing and I finally found a broken wire that was right at a plug into another set of wires.and the plug connectors were really corroded I tried to just clean them and just try to make a connection with the broken wire. I tried the trim and again the relays both just clicked the same as they had been doing but I knew that it was almost impossible for both relays to go out at the same time. I then came across an article about how to fix your power trim and it read if your relays are clicking then they are good. Thank GOD for that article I then deechnology cided to connect the wires at the corroded plug straight to each other and I pushed the trim up button and it was working fine pushed trim down and it was also working fine. This is the first forrum that I have ever joined and don't know alot about technology especially computers I am trying to learn both please be patient with me and thank you for your replies it feels good to be part of something where people actually try to help you and have good intentions and knowledgeable people. Sincerely,Steve S

Steve, glad you are making progress on the diagnosis. This forum is THE BEST for getting advice to DIY'ers on OMC/BRP outboards. Many helpful folks here with tremendous hands-on knowledge....

Glad you solved it...just for your info...many many times a relay will click and not transmit power. The click is the relay closing the switch. Many times it's the contact portion that gets burned out so, just cause they click does not mean they are good. In fact, when they click but nothing happens it usually means they are bad. Sorry I miss read your post about it going down but not up...that is nearly always a relay if you have eliminated the switch
