I have a 1998 Mercury 200.The previous owner painted the motor white and painted over the transom bracket serial#.I tried to remove the paint from around the sticker but i destroyed it.Are there any other #'s on the motor. The powerhead was changed on this motor so i don't think i will find anything there. Will i have problems if i want to sell this motor without a serial#?Any info is appreciated

Re: serial #

Why did he paint the motor white? And why a new power head on a 1998 200? My suggestion is you call the previous owner up and ask for serial number. I have a merc manual, I will look and see if they put the serial number any where else and let you know. You should have a problem selling it without number in most states. Happy boating.

I meant to say you shouldn't have a problem selling it in most states.

Look on the port side the engine and there should be a welch plug with the serial number. The welch plug should be just below flywheel and forward. Happy boating.
