serial numbers again

Hi guys, I have a 20hp Mercury SN 9565190 mid 80's model I was told, however when I go to Mercury's parts express website and enter this sn it tells me that no such sn exists. Why is it so.

Looks like a 1989 model.<br /><br />20 9548542 - 9585999= 1989 2 cyl <br /><br />This is Mercury Parts Express explanation:<br /><br />"Engine/drive serial numbers that begin with a zero and a letter (example 0A123456) and above are able to be entered in this site. If your engine/drive serial number is 7-digits and not preceded by a letter (pre 1980), it will produce an error message. If you receive an error message, click on the Mercury logo (bottom left corner of every page) and search for a factory-authorized Mercury Marine dealer in the Dealer Locator".

Thanks Rick, not a big deal to me just interested however you seem to contradict yourself here you say it's an 1989 model but this error comes up with pre 1980 model motors.

As I said, it's not my explanation of why it won't take the number. Just passing along info... No letters before the number...

Going by the 9* your motor is a European or Belgian motor.These are quite common here in Oz.<br />If it has red/grey stripes around the cowling, Rick would be right at 1989. Mid 80's were brownbands.

Thanks guys, yes has red/grey stripes sounds like 89 model and yes I think it is the Belgian motor.
