If he sets timing with the control box in place you need to find a new mechanic. The idle timing is set in gear in the water and is going to be set so that it idles at 700 ish RPM. Whatever timing you get at that RPM is what you get.

OK, the idle control box is completely out and not going back in ever again. So what do we set now? WOT at 23deg? What about cranking timing?

Stop asking about the cranking timing. You don't set it like you do WOT timing. You get what you get.

WOT. Yes, 23 degrees.
Cranking 700 RPM in gear in water. don't worry about the number.

so i guess the timing is good as it is now, 23 deg at WOT and thats it. Thanks.
