Twice now I've experienced this.

I'm Largemouth fishing a small lake (75 acres) in Northern New Jersey.

I've tried Texas, Carolina, weightless and Whacky rigging 4" Black/Halo and 3" White Senkos - not a nibble.

Both times out - I switch from Senkos to Rapala floating (or semi floating) 3" and 4" inch minnows and BANG - fish on after first cast.

Is plastic worm fishing that difficult ?

Fish have been taken in shallow water (2-3').

hmm, thats hard to say. have you been fishing long? it is different, and it takes a little getting used to. maybe you're not feeling them take the worm? sometimes they just inhale it without really moving much - and it feels like a peck. sometimes they just clamp down on it and move away slowly, then you have to be watching your line. the good bites are when you get a little yank, then the line moves to one side quickly. keep trying ;)

Tony, been my experience that some baits in some lakes are just better than others. There are so many factors involved that it is hard to say whether you are doing anything wrong or not. I have had similar experiences with different baits, on the same lake at different times, or different lakes at the same time. Heck, thats what makes it fun! Just use what works.

Tony, I have fished with worms and it was not until about 6 years ago did I really get the hang of it. Just a suggestion for you to try....we used to keep medical syringes (sp?) on the boat. They were small needles that we used to inject air pockets into the rubber worms. This would force a section of the worm to try to float adding to it's movement when we fished.

Bob

Where's Buffalo66 when you need him; you know, the guy looking for rubber snakes instead of rubber worms? I bet he's got some good tips! I'm like Bob, within the last few years, the rubber worm has been my weapon of choice. I use mostly solid black Berkley 8". What really got me hooked are these new hooks I found. I think their made by Lunker(green and yellow package). They have a small barbed shaft(about 1") that goes right in to the top of the worm, then you just bury the hook, weedless style, right into the worm. The weight is built right in to the shaft of the hook. I think they are much easier in feeling the strikes.

I guess one thing I'm learning on this lake is the "change up" seems to work. Seems I can fish an area a second time with a change of lure and get a strike. Tells me the fish are in the water - just have to find what they like that day.

I was just wondering why no hits on the Senko.

But I'll take what I can get. It's definately fun.

what are senko's ?? if fish are hittin' rappelas that's tellin' me they'er in reaction mode.. not sluggish worm mode which is 'bout standard for spring time fishin'. bet the worms will work better when the lake warms up ..

TonyM,

You should find the basses main source of food, mainly baitfish and match the senko to the color of the fish. With this acomplished, your lure will resemble a wounded baitfish causing the bass to strike. Good Luck.

MattL
