thanks to the great info on this site, i found the problem with my gas gauge. the sending unit wire vibrated loose. my question is on the post for the pink wire was a cardboard sleeve that didnt allow the wire connector to hit the base of the sending unit. what is the purpose of this sleeve? i took it off, tightened the nut and the gas gauge works fine. i have a 94 johnson 90HP. thanks in advance...brian

Fuel gauges work on resistance. You may have noticed that if you touch the pink wire to the tank(if its allm.)or the the ground wire at the sender the fuel gauge will pin to full. That piece of carboard helps prevent the pin from touching any other part of the sender assembly from grounding out.

If it's a pain in the butt don't worry about it's all about the resistance to ground that makes it work.
