The boat is 2000 Bayliner Capri 1952. It looks like it is 5inch deep by WEMA, five whole mount, The type that goes straight down into the tank and has a sliding ring. I took it out, connected a multimeter and as I moved the ring up and down the resistance fluctuated. Before I took it out, the fuel gauge was stuck in full setting, now that I put it back it is stuck in empty (although the tank is half-full). Any advice?

Might be time to replace the unit but, I would check the gauge first.

It is important to get the ohms reading from the sender in the full up and full down position. That will tell you if the sender is working correctly. Although the resistance may have changed it is important to know the range that it traveled.

Are you able to do a little more testing of the sender ?

Also be safe working around the fuel tank.

Your boat uses a standard marine sending unit, so no worries there. When you tested the sender, did the resistance change smoothly as you moved the float, and were the values roughly between 33 and 240 ohms? If not, the sender is suspect. Also ensure all the wiring and connections are intact.
