Semi Seized 30HP Suzuki Outboard Questions

So my brother gave me his fishing boat over Thanksgiving weekend. It was prodominantly used in Illinois and was all freshwater fished. He bought it relatively new (early 2000's) and only used it for a few years. As soon as he bought this motor, he had the heads planed for extra horsepower. I drove the boat from Illinois to Florida and it is now in my possession.

We took it out a few times with no issues. Then we took it out again when the motor seized up after shutting off a few times. When we got the boat back to my house, we pulled the plugs and WD-40'd the motor. After a day or so, the motor unfroze by hand turning the pull start.

We took the boat out again the next weekend and it started up fine. After 5 hours of being on the water (mostly slow/trolling at the beginning and running 2/3-full throttle the last 2 hours) the motor seized up again.

We got it back home and pulled the plugs again and did the same thing. This time it is partially unseized. You can pull the motor and about 1/4 turn it will be free and then become harder/seized, then you can pull another 1/4 and it will do the same thing. It isnt fully seized, but becomes difficult to pull after each 1/4 turn.

No overheating happened (or atleast the alarm), it was pissing water fine and no smoke other than the normal grey smoke. It literally just shut off

In between the first and second seize, we originally thought it wasnt receiving oil from teh injector so we removed the oil injecion reserve and started mixing the oil and gas.

Any thoughts?

He "planed" the head for extra HP? Wonder how much? Maybe pull the head to inspect cylinder walls and pistons. If the cylinders and pistons are scored up from being seized then it may require an overbore/new pistons, or new/rebuilt powerhead, or start looking for a replacement motor. Good Luck!

yeah, thats what he told me. Im not sure why he ould plane them but thats what he told me.

When i mention i can pull the rope 1/4 turn before it seizes/tightens it means that I can pull it fully out but it catches/tightens 3 or 4 times before full extended.

Im hoping for the best

maybe the tightening is the compression, like normal. How much oil are you mixing in the gas, like 50:1? Try pulling the rope with the spark plugs removed to get an idea how much is normal compression and how much is seizing. Good Luck!

OK BOATS GOOD ACCEPT FOR 1 thing

OK BOATS GOOD ACCEPT FOR 1 thing

If you see my thread from earlier today, we got it running and unseized and good to go. However, when we got it on the water, the overheat censor came on within the first 2 mins.

We instantly shut it off and trolled back to the dock. We took off the lower unit and the impeller looks brand new.

Any thoughts?

Do you have a tell tale on the motor? If not, could/can you see water coming out of the back of the motor when it's running? If not, you may have an obstruction in the cooling system....or the impeller looks new, but is actually weak.

What year/model is the motor?

Once a motor seizes, unless you fix the damage that caused seizing and what caused it to get to that point ,then you are not going to get it to run properly. It does not magically fix itself.

I have seen a motor lower unit lock up due to lack of lub and the unlock after sitting for a few hours, but it toasted the lower unit in the process

Re: Semi Seized 30HP Suzuki Outboard Questions

The motor is a 2000 30HP Suzuki Outboard. When we got it unseized, the motor was running fine and the water was pissing out the normal area and then on the back of the lower unit as well. Even though an impeller can look brand new, it could still need to be replaced?

Here is a video of it running yesterday. Thanks in advance, corycb https://flic.kr/p/bEPcDT

A motor that physically binds up to the point it stops, and will not turn any more,
has metal problems, piston, rings, cylinder walls, or bearings and shafts damaged.
Breaking it free does not fix the damage.

Good luck if you keep on running it, but I would not depend on it ,
don't get into a bind and let it risk yourself or others
