well Home depot and Lowes are the big box stores around here and they have squat when it comes to trying to find paint for my boat project.... they don't have the gray primer in rustoleum , I want, nor do they have flats in the color I want, nor do they sell hardeners, nor do they sell gallon primers in self etch......I see that tractor supply has some of that, but it doesn't look like they sell the self etching primer in gallons or quarts...only in aresol cans..i want to use my spray gun to paint the boat.....so I want gallon containers, reducer, and hardener to mix to spray....is there any other source that is common, that you guys know these things can be had....or.. one online source is good too...I want quart or a gallon of self etching primer, the same in regular oil based metal primer, and I want a flat gray top coat, with reducer and hardener.....and ill probably want to tint the top coat to get a gray that I like..... anyone ?thanks bob

for this stuff, go to any automotive paint store that sells primarily to body shops. if no luck there, maybe try Aircraft Spruce. you'll pay a premium to ship the stuff due to hazard issues, so it's a lot cheaper to buy locally if you can find it.

Unless you remove all of the old paint, spray can self-etching is fine. You only need a light coat on bare spots.

I got my self etching at Wally world in the Automotve section where they have there bodywork supplies. It is the Rusto brand and I used less then two spray cans of it. I used Valspar hardener from our local Best hdwe. store for my Rusto paint that I rolled on.

Re: self etching primer...where?

i am thinking this bottom thats stripped is too much to paint with a rattle can....so i want to buy liquid primer and spray it...plus it will revisit me with spray painting a little before i need to prime and top coat...as i havent used the equipment in many years. Ill get way way better coverage with my binks gun.

i have a little time as I now am going to take the boat tyo a elder to seal up the outdrive hole...Ill probbaly flipped to the boat to take it to the welder, then Ill work on the inside and seal and paint possible, before i do the outside....Ill also hopefully have made my outboard bracket by then...... trying to get a handle on the swim deck height.... Id like mine close to the waterline, but not enough to drag when i first take off...

didn't you use easypoxy on one of your boats, and didn't like it? did you redo the boat or you painted another boat with duplicolor? did you use an etching primer from duplicolor, or just the top coat?bob

Re: self etching primer...where?

The question was about self etching primer. I used Duplicolor's self etching primer when I painted my transom as there was a lot of bare aluminum to be dealt with.

I used Rustoleum (rattle can) self eching primer over bare aluminum, filler primer (rattle can) to fill and smooth, then a coat of Rustoleum (rattle can) Rusty Metal Primer, then last with my Harbor Freight spray gun Rustoleum Marine. Just get one of those rattle can holders with trigger, and it works just like a spray gun. Hasn't peeled yet.

It pretty much all has to be ordered here, so I just go to amazon, they have self etching promer and rustoleum topside, including grey primer in qts. Red primer is hard to cover. And they have the hardener in small cans.
