self bailing cockpit

I am new to sailing and I have a question about the self bailing system. The other day I started to launch my 23 Macgregor and I notice water coming in the drain on the floor in cockpit. Shouldn't there be a check valve to keep water flowing back in the boat? When the boat was on the trailer I wash it and the water ran out the drain hole just above the water line. Needless to say when I saw the water coming in the cockpit I pulled the boat back out of the water. Perhaps it was the angle of the boat because it was still on the trailer when the water started to come in. If anyone has any information I would apprecate it. Scottiv

Re: self bailing cockpit

My previous boat had rubber flaps on the scuppers that would prevent water from entering when launching.

It depends on the boat BUT the stern is ALLWAYS going to be much deeper than normal whan launching

On my 24' boat they are at least 6" above the water when the boat is level and to even get them close would take at least 4 people in the stern

it is normal and no problem - if the angle of the launch is not to steep... the water will drain if the boat levels off.
But with an old squash ball cut in half and two pieces of shock cord you can make them yourself...

Re: self bailing cockpit

I had a plug in the bottom just to st'b'd of the daggerboard trunk. I shipped some water when comming about while I was still on the leeward side. I saw the plug and said to myself "Oh!, A self bailer" and pulled the plug and was treated to a three foot high gyser of water. But when I got her up on a plane, the water did drain out. The boat's name was Oh Sh*t and as that trip was my Maiden Voyage, I called her name several times that day.:(
