Hello

I am new to owning a boat so I just purchased a 1989 Capri and trailer minus the motor. All cables from the previous motor were left. Will I need to get new cables with the motor or will the motor simply connect?

Thanks

Cables are usually specific to the motor, but if you get into an 89 Force 50 you should be getting back into the same motor that boat came with (actually some of the years surrounding that were also the same electrical footprint.. Also the max rating for the transom is 50hp. Be sure you've checked that the floor/transom are not rotted under the carpet.

I think Mercs/Mariners will work with the shift and throttle cables, as might some other brands. The electrical plug is another matter. Post this question in the Force/Chrysler outboard section.

Just trying to be helpful, but I believe Force was Chrysler up to 87 or so, then US Marine/Bayliner through 91ish, then Mercury only after that. So that's why I was saying some years surrounding that, I'm assuming you'd need to be either in US Marine or Chrysler as Force under Mercury was post 80's and OP has late 80's hull. I'm not a motor expert though, just finding this out through my own experience with a '90 Bayliner Capri (US Marine Force 50)

The Cables, both electrical and mechanical shift/throttle, ARE NOT the same between the '89 Force and all Mercs. The Force goes one direction to add throttle, the Merc the other, etc.

I have the same boat, the 15' 1989 Bayliner 1500 and I attached a 50 HP 1985 classic 4 Merc on it.

It is not a perfect match. I had to replace the electrical cables and mechanical cables and throttle. And the mounting holes did not match.

Honestly, the best engine for that boat is in fact another Force 50hp of similar vintage.
