I'm looking to buy a used v bottom deck boat and have found some I like but they all have under 125 HP. I want around 200 HP.
Any tips in selecting a different outboard for it?
Thanks,
James

Re: Selecting an Outboard

what is the max hp rating for the boats. if you go about that, you are putting yourself in jeopardy. as it will be considered and unsafe boat, insurance won't pay off if and incident occured. lawyers love to sue over over powered boats. look at the inboard/outboard deck boats, if you want that much HP. we have a 1999 Chris Craft 230 deckboat that is great 5.7 L volvo outdrive.

Re: Selecting an Outboard

Actually I do like I/O's better. That's what our last boat was and it was easy for me to work on and it looked more sleek and easier to ski behind. The only reason I'm looking into a outboard this time is because the boat has to stay in the saltwater Florida Intracoastal and I love the fact that the outboard can be completely raised out of the water when docked. However I'm still open to suggestions maintaining an I/O always in salt or selecting an outboard.

Thanks again,
James

Re: Selecting an Outboard

I/O in salt if new, needs the closed cooling system, but this just covers the block, the manifolds and lower unit are still seawater cooled.. what some do, if available at the dock. install the flush muffs lower the lower unit, turn the fresh water on and idle for a while, to flush out the system. then raise the lower unit, and leave the muffs on, with the hose attached, to help prevent seawater from entering. it's not perfect but better than nothing. also a 200 hp weight so much even when tilted most lowers are still partially in the water.
