I have a 1 yr old SEI 116, which is a basic Alpha 1 Gen 2 outdrive. I've put close to 40hrs on this outdrive since May. When I changed the gear lube, the old lube came out Black. I put the recommended green high performance gear lube in it before the season. Is this black color normal with 40hrs of use?

This is a conversion kit for an OMC cobra. No problems with the outdrive so far.

Yes normal. What gear ratio? Others have had complaints about certain ratio's. Just curious what you have. Just use the hi perf & you'll be fine!

Re: SEI 116 outdrive lube 2010

I got the SEI in a 1:81 ratio. It's attached to a 4.3LX setup. (converted the 2bbl to a 4bbl weber from a merc 1996)

It's a different ratio than the original OMC 1:64 ratio. It actually runs better on my rig. I'm getting 4900rpm at wot with a 15x15 prop. I am considering moving up to a 14.5x17 prop to see if I can get more speed on the top end. But, when the boat is fully loaded, fuel, gear and 4 guys, she gets on plane with the 15x15 prop. So, I will leave it for now.

Thanks for the reply. I feel better.

This is a very good thing. This means the fluid has held up and is well used. It should come out dark like you are seeing. A creame green, or swirl is bad.
