Though I have had a comment or two, none were overwhelmingly astute on the problem.

I put a water pump on an '86 Merc 35 Hp. I followed the posts pertaining to replacing the LU on a 35 Hp Merc. Several times I put the LU on and took it off. Still I have problems. I aligned the coper water tube and had the shift lever in Neutral, brought the shift cam to nuetral and installed the LU only to have no forward or Reverse at the prop. I have done this several times to no avail. What are your suggestions?

On my 1982 IL6 90 hp , The manuel says to put it in forward when removing and installing.

Your engine s/n comes up as a model:

1035716 MERCURY 1986 35

Parts listing:

There are two types of reverse locking cams, the early ones which were two part metal and the newer one piece composite cam. Your engine has the newer style and for this cam, the LU is shifted into Forward before installing but you must also have the boat in Forward as well.

But before any of that happens, you must have the reverse locking cam positioned correctly on the LU shift shaft. Did you ensure that it was positioned correctly before you installed the LU?

This is a picture of the reverse locking cam from the parts list:

Thanks for the replies, If I understand how this thing works I had it partially right. I did not have it in forward on the consol but rather nuetral and I am assuming the high flat spoy on the cam to be nuetral as well since turning the cam one way or the other put it in either forward or reverse. So I had the cam and control in nuetral. Does this sound correct?

I have 4-5 times removed the LU to the point if I had insurance it would be scrap right now.

There are thousands of readers here that could slap that LU on blindfolded. We all feel like rushing in to help with a title like that.

When you are ready to install the LU, position it in Neutral. Install the cam on the shift shaft splines with the upper edge of the sliding ramp facing exactly 12 o'clock (looking down on it from the rear) so the flat spot is off to the (approximately) one o'clock position. This will mean that in Neutral/Reverse the rod from the locking pawls will be sitting on the flat spot and the rod will be pushed upwards locking the engine. When you select Fwd., the rod slides down the sliding ramp and the engine is free to rise if you hit something in the water.

Now shift the LU and the boat into Fwd and install the LU.

One thing to keep an eye on - I have had some upper shift rods get pushed up when the lower unit is installed. Once up, they stay up until pushed back down. It sounds to me like the upper and lower are simply not engaging and that could be the cause...
