In the process of replacing a single bad piston and ring set on my 2001 200HP Merc w/No EFI.

From what I gather thus far Merc replacement pistons and rings are priced as though they were gold.

Am I ok with using with using an after-market piston and ring set.

Who's got good Merc parts with good prices out there? (Ring set, piston, gaskets and such)

I have one bad piston due to an oil issue.
Anyone out there have a good idea as to what other things I should look at inside this engine when I have it opened up. A dealer gave me some insight, I was lookig for a second opinion.
I will reply with what they told me (as soon as I locate the paper)....

greg

you probably don't have 1 bad pistion b/c of an oil issue, unless the others are just about to go. It was more likely a carb issue, leaning out. Is the piston melted down or broken?

k

Oil line seperated from the main tank, reserve was sucked dry, no alarm sounded. Engine kinda began to die. Shut it down in time soon enough so as not to cause further damage. Why only one cylinder damaged... (lucky I guess..)
All other cylinders have great compression and I'm going to leave as is. Only the one cracked piston. I think I can fix the cylinder with a quick honing.

greg

looks like the ring/piston swelled and the ring set caught on the exhause port area in the cylinder causing a fracture in the piston, and a small chunk to break off.

You can try Wiseco.com for aftermarket pistons, but I would just buy a merc piston (with rings on it)for about $160 in the Dallas Tx area. If you use "Mercury Parts Express" it will be over $200. The Wiseco route for me has not been any cheaper, unless you are doing all 6. Did you pull all the pistons out and look at them? Make sure you do, and look for scoring on the sides. The pistons usually start melting away at the exhaust port.

Thanks Bushcat,

My compression was great in all other cylinders, so I was aiming to cross my fingers and hope for the best.

greg

I'd go with the Pro Marine piston and rings from Rickracer.

c/6
Hooty
