Re: Securing Rods ?

hi jarhead. ive used them off and on for years, and never had a problem with them. as long as they have the retainer ring that stops your pole from just sliding out, they should be fine. we have had 25 lb. plus king salmon hit using them and never lost a pole yet. [mine are the plastic kind from wall mart for about 12.00] and do not tie anything to the pole, as it interfers with bringing the fish in. good luck....bob

I always tie my rods with a safety line. Just buy yourself some good line and a good brass swivel Lost a rod once to a large mahi mahi. Then we lost the school 45 minutes in a differant area my friend brought up the rod he had hooked it to his hook on his rod and told me i did not believe it until I saw my rod swimming back to the boat. true story always tie off your rods

They should make a strap for your hand also. Last year I was casting a live 3 pound mackerel to some schooling cow stripers, didn't open the bail, and the rod and reel went sailing overboard.

I also use the plastic Wal-Mart kind and never had a problem with rods staying in holders. The only problem I had was left dip net stuck in holder once and was going down road, met 18 wheeler, holder snapped at post and destroyed net, ran over by truck behind me. While holders will hold 50lb. catfish wont hold net when meeting truck going 60mph. I agree a strap for hand would be nice. My brother was fishing with me last spring on Santee river with a new outfit that he had just bought the day before, AMB.6500 on a 7'Ugly stick, had a good strike. He took the rod out of the rod holder to set the hook on running fish.Well he must have tightened down the drag and not checked it, because when he flipped the lever from freespool to lock, fish took rod overboard.I will never forget the look on his face as he stood there saying my rod , my rod. It looked like a water skier it was moving across the water so fast it was throwing a rooster tail. He looked at me and asked "why didn't you get it." I told him " man that was your **** , I wasn't going overboard to get it." The last we saw of rod it was about 60' away and still on top of water but moving very fast down river. I still pick at him about weak wrists.

Re: Securing Rods ?

This won’t secure the rod, but reminded me of something. Invited a part-time fishing guide to join me one day. He had pipe insulation (that gray foam like type) between his spinning reel and the first eye. I ask about it and he said he puts it on all his rods. He said a customer ‘cast’ a rod and reel overboard. The rod was about $50 and the reel about $125. The foam pipe insulation is about $1.00 a yard. You do the math!! Burn me once, shame on you, burn me twice, shame on me.
