It looks like my teleflex seastar hydraulic steering cylinder is starting to leak form the cylinder where the rods come out on both sides. Unit is about 14 years old. my question is: do i have to buy that whole rebuilding kit (around 90 bucks) or can i just replace the outer seals?
thanks in advance......joe

The "rebuilding kit" is just the seals. Well, it includes the wrench you'll need and a guide that lets you slip the new glands (the aluminum plug that holds the two seals that are in each end) over the rod without damaging it. You really don't need the wrench or the guide but they are nice to have. You can remove the gland with a pipe wrench if you want to and the guide is unnecessary at all. The seals themselves are not speciality items, at least that is what a local hydraulics repair shop told me about 2 years ago. I was told that you could buy all 4 seals (2 in each side) for about $10. Changing them is no big deal either and if you are at all careful you won't even have to worry about bleeding the system. I can tell you that if this is the first time around for you that you are lucky but also that you should buy the kit the first time just for a spare set of glands. You can get your old ones resealed at your liesure and have them ready for the next time.

Thom
