New to this forum and just purchased a older Sears Diehard 36lb thrust trolling motor. Is there any maintainence with trolling motors? I did not get a manual for the motor, it runs fine and all speeds work. Also will a regular deep cycle marine battery will work for me? I have a Evinrude 6hp to get me around I just need the trolling motor to push me around while fishing. The trolling motor will only be used for an hour or so each trip.

I have searched this forum for threads that would answer my questions but can't find any. Any information would be appreciated.

Welcome to iBoats!

There shouldn't be any maintenance to worry about with your trolling motor. I would inspect it the best you can (remove prop and check for old fishing line, etc) and as long as all the switches and settings work, then you're good to go. As far as battery, a regular deep cycle marine battery is perfect for trolling. Have fun and be safe!

Charge the troller battery immediately after every use. Even if you were only out for an hour or so. Never - ever run it totally dead or anywhere near dead.

Thanks for the information. Should I charge the battery slowly like at 2 amps or a little faster at 6 amps?

Now I just have to figure out where to mount everything in my tin boat.

Oh God! The dreaded "should I charge fast or slow question!" Pandora's box is opened again. A battery can be charged at up to 20% of its amp/hour rating. 2 amps is a trickle charge and used to keep a battery topped off. Charge it at 6 amps, 10, amps or 15 amps. Makes no difference as long as you don't go over the 20% and even then that likely would have so little effect it would not be a consideration on longevity as long as it wasn't common practice.
