Just acquired 1997 searayder jet boat with 120 hp merc engine. I think it is a f14. It will not start and was running last year. My Niece owned it and said it ran ok but was hard to start.

Mechanic said try new battery... no results. Is there a diagnostic system that will work through the minor things (like check spark plugs) until we get to the major parts. The mechanic is talking about a stator being the problem and he will be going to see it in a couple of days.

I do not want to get ri[pped by a some mechanic that have been accused of wanting to make a career out of fixing this boat.

Is there a dependable sea rayder dealership or mechanic around the Orillia area?
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: searayder wont start

Do your basics first.

Drain your fuel tank and replace fuel ( last season's gas is this season's problem)

Replace your spark plugs ( every season )

Check the bowls on your carbs, clean if necessary.

Check your kill switch, make sure it's operational

And here are a few things that have made my life easier

Put a manual fuel primer bulb in between the gas tank and the fuel pump.
(These boats have a self priming pump, but in my experience its rather weak, and this will ensure your fuel line has plenty of gas up to the motor)

I also went with a much larger than factory battery, a dual purpose 1100 cranking amp battery. This will give you enough chances to start the motor before your battery dies.
