I am looking for a new electronic fuel pump for this boat. It has a 1998 4.3 Chevy Mercruiser Apha Outdrive. Does anyone know what that part number would be or do I need to have more info to pin it down?

Thanks,

Got a SN for the engine? Merc goes by SN, not year or model.

Re: Searay 185 Bowrunner Fuel Pump Needed

This boat is a friend of mine's boat. He just gave me all the paper work on it and the operation and maintenance manual has a sticker on it with these two numbers
4-211015LS and
0L065737
Are either of these an engine number?
Thanks,
If not, do you know where on the engine the number would be?

Reel Poor, could you be more specific on the o'rings and fuel filter info. As this is a friend's boat (who I don't think knows much about it), and I am only familiar with my outboard, could you explain exactly what I need to purchase in addition to the fuel pump? I found the fuel pump on another site and it looks like it comes with two different sized o'rings and a brass nut of some kind.

Thanks

If the pump comes with the fittings and o-rings you should be good to go. Click on the link below then click on Parts for Mercury Marine Products. When the next page opens enter the serial number, click continue. The next page requires your zip code, then click continue. Then your nearest dealer list will be displayed, click continue. Now from the drop down list pick "Fuel Pump and Fuel Filter". Then there should be a list and picture of all the componants.

Re: Searay 185 Bowrunner Fuel Pump Needed

Thanks, again, Reel Poor. I clicked on the link, but there is no diagram of parts on it. Maybe I did not look good enough. Another question if you have an answer - how does one check to see if the fuel pump is indeed defective? I read somewhere on another forum where an oil pressure sensor could cause fuel pump problems by telling the pump to shut down due to low oil pressure.

Thanks again for all the help.

First off, read ^^ again. I edited my post.

This is the first think you should order.
Service Manual part number 90-861328 1

Here is a typical wiring diagram of the fuel circuit.

Thanks, Reel Poor. I agree that my buddy needs to order the service manual for his rig. I have one for my outboard. I know absolutely nothing about his type of boat (you probably figured that out already). Thanks again for your trouble. I just told the friend that he needs to find out if the fuel pump really is his problem as playing "guess a part" when dealing with boats is very expensive. Again, thanks for all your help.

Re: Searay 185 Bowrunner Fuel Pump Needed

One more question and I will retire myself from this thread. My friend has his electric fuel pump completely removed. He now is not ready to spend $200 for a new one without knowing if the pump is really defective. How can he test it to see if it is defective? Is there something simple that can be done to check it?

Thanks for any help offered,
Ron

Re: Searay 185 Bowrunner Fuel Pump Needed

If the pumps not running use a volt/ohm meter and check voltage and ground circuits using the diagram above. Here's a test he can do. It will require a vacuum gauge. If you have a fuel pressure tester with the proper connections you can also, but not only, check the fuel pressure between the pump and the carb. DO NOT CUT ANY STEEL LINES use the proper fitting to splice into any of the fuel lines.

The best idea would be to state what the problem with the engine is, will it not start, not run, what.
It really sucks to find you have a loose connection in a place you didn't even know there was a connection.

Re: Searay 185 Bowrunner Fuel Pump Needed

Yeah, I know, Don. This friend has never even told me what his problem/symptoms were. I talked him out of buying a new pump for the time being until he has a better understanding of what is going on. I appreciate all the info you and everyone else have given me.

Thanks,
Ron
