Motor in signature. I need to press new bearings and seals into the stern bracket. I've already removed the old ones and I forget which direction the seals were facing. I'm looking at my parts motor now and the seals seem to be "upside down". What I mean by that is that it looks like somebody pressed the seals in from the side that doesn't have letters or numbers stamped into it. I've read in the service manual and on many posts here in the forum that seals and bearings should ALWAYS be pressed in by pushing the lettered side. Were the seals in backwards on my parts motor or are the stern bracket seals an exception?

It really depends on whether you want to keep water out or lubricant in.

I would fit those with the lettered side innermost ( like your parts motor) on the basis that their main purpose is to keep water out of the bearings.

Take care not to damage the lip on the inside

That makes sense Vic S. But, there is a grease nipple there at the stern bracket. Therefore, lube needs to stay in. Would it still be more important to keep the water out than it would be to keep the lube in?

Yeah, the more I think about what you said Vic S., the more sense it makes. It's better to keep out the water. If some lube escapes over time, it doesn't matter because more grease can be (and should be) added periodically by way of the nipple. I was just having a bit of trouble with the fact that it was pressed from the "wrong" side. At least I thought it was wrong based on what I've learned about this motor so far. I guess there are always exceptions to the rule.
