Sealing transom mount holes

I moved my engine (200hp evinrude) up on the transom, and I want to reseal the bolt holes before I put it in the water. My plan is to remove one bolt at a time, fill the hole with 5200 (I bought the caulk-gun size tube) then reinstall bolt. Is this sufficient? Any better way to do it? I don't want to rot my transom out.

Also what's a good torque value for these bolts. I have an air impact gun, should this tighten them enough? Or should I stick to a spec with a torque wrench?

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Sealing transom mount holes

hello
somewhere around 50ft lbs. but dont use the impact. it can pull the washers right through the glass. I seal the transoms by running a bead around the bolt shank and a bead around the hole on the transom as well as some under the washer. if you fill the hole the bolt will just push it out.
good luck and keep posting

If it were me, and I stand to be corrected, I would plug the holes with dowel rod of as close a fit (diameter) as you can get, but cut a quarter inch shorter than the thickness of the transon. Hammer it into the hole allowing yourself room to fill the ends with gellcoat then sand off to make it invisible. If there is any moisture in the transom it will cause the dowel rod to swell and you know that it is water tight right through the thickness of the transom.
Just my opinion.
Andy

Hey Andy, When i say I moved the motor, I just raised it up a couple holes on the mount, using the same bolt holes in the transom. I did not need to drill new holes. I just want to re-seal the bolts since I disturbed them.

Rodbolt, thanks. I'll put the impact gun away and break out the torque wrench. :D

Just seal around the washers, then tighten...

Re: Sealing transom mount holes

I liberally coat the entire length of the bolt. This way, as the bolt is entering the transom and passing through, enough is being skimmed to form a good amount at the hole entrance and inside the outboard transom bracket mount hole. I put a little more around the threads on the inside of boat and tighten. This way I know the hole is sealed.

I will actually have to do the dowel method Andy mentioned, as I will be raising my motor again and have run out of holes. I will have to drill new holes above my current holes. My other option (which I may do) is to just run bolts through the old holes, sealed well of course, and call it good. The dowel method (with epoxy o' plenty) is the better bet though...

If I had holes to completely fill I would do as Andy as suggested except I would use Marine Tex for a filler.
