I am going to be installing the new seals for my 1961 5.5Hp Johnson and was wondering about whether I use any sealant on these things when I put them in.

I have both the OMC Gasket Sealer (the one with the brush in the cap) and 3M#847 (like sealer 1000 - becomes a rubbery gasket type seal).

I plan to slosh the area around the spagetti seal and around the prop O'ring with sealer 1000 but I am not sure about the other three.

The driveshaft seal, prop. shaft seal and the shift rod bushing are made of metal on the outside edges. Do I put a little sealant between the seal's metal outside and my engine casing and if so what type? Do I do anything with the seals insides which are made of rubber? Thanks for your thoughts.

Re: Sealing the Seals

Use the gasket sealer around the outside of the seal. Nothing on the inside of the shaft seals and/or shift rod seal except some oil.
