Seal Mercruser Shift rod

The seal in the Mercruser shilt lever in my Alpha 1 Gen 2 needs to be replaced. what way does it go? the one I took out was in with with the lip up to the water, it looks like it should go in like a regular seal with the lip down to the oil. please help.

If I remember (just did mine a few months ago), it was lip up. I just put it in the same way it came out. The local marina says they don't even change those seals but rather have had better luck changing that whole housing vs. just the seal. Dunno, guess they had a few leak.<br /><br />Jeff
