Hi. I've got an older 5 HP Seaking outboard. When I tilt the motor up, it leaks quite a bit of gas from the carb. What needs to be done to fix this problem? thx, Joe

How old? A lot of them just do that. Turn the gas off before tilting. Steer the motor so that the tank outlet is at the highest point. Motors were pretty sloppy in the "good" old days.

I think it's a 1969. The model is CED-28925A.

Oh, by "old" I was expecting a Gale from the '50s. Yes yours is a 1969 made by Eska. They had various carburetors and fuel tanks. It is basically a lawn mower engine on an outboard lower unit. They sold a ton of them through Wards, Sears, and others. They sold cheap and were cheap.

So, I guess the leaky carb (when the engine is tilted) is typical of these engines? Or do you think there might be a problem with the float or something?

By the very nature of a float, they don't work too well when they are floating sideways. Some carburetors can tolerate it pretty well, others don't.

If it doesn't flood when level, and if it runs good, just leave it be.
