How any hours can you expect to put on a 787 motor before going through the top end? Should you do it on a regular basis or just go by compression?

there is no set hours on a 787 if it aint broke don't fix it.You should clean the rave valves occasionally though. It seems the 787 runs the best just before it hatches.

With that said, it seems that freshening up the motor before you think it needs it might save a costlier rebuild later, No?

Not really, if you periodically monitor the compression, and check rod berring play, you get a pretty good idea of the condition of the engine, also with the raves removed you can see the rings enough to see if they are ok when the rings break it usually happens on the exhaust side and that is where the raves are. to check play remove the plugs, rotate the engine by hand at the pto, bring the piston just past t d c , hold the pto still and push down on the top of the piston with a screwdriver, if there is a lot of play or wear in the wristpin or rod berring you will hear the piston clunk as you push it down, at that point I would start thinking of a rebuild but not just a top end as that would not solve the problem, it would be ready for a total rebuild.

O.K. I don't want to beat a dead horse here, but the full story is that I bought this ski at a good price because it ran real bad and the guy didn't know what was wrong with it. The exhaust hose had a hole in it and it was ingesting its' own exhaust and wouldn't run right. Fixed it, runs great but the inside is coated with oil/soot. I am going to pull everything out of it during the winter. Since I will have the motor out, should I just check it like you said and put it back in if it checks out or since I have it out, should I go through it.
