Hi all ..

Firstly, I apologize for my bad English, I'm from Denmark in northern cold europe :)

I have just purchased a Sea Rayder from 1995 with the Sport Jet engine.
I've only just tried to test for spark, but there is no spark ..

flywheel is new after the old suddenly destroyed the magnets, but I have doubts about the stator or switchbox also been destroyed.

where should I start? can i use a voltmeter to detect if the stator has a defective?

look forward to hearing from some wise people here :)

Sincerely,
Kokaninus

Welcome to the forum! It's kinda quiet around here this time of year but we'll see if we can help you out. (Denmark question: does the little mermaid still have her head?)

I can't tell from the picture but verify you have the black stator. It should have a red wire and a blue wire going to the switchbox (I believe some aftermarket stators were black but had different colored wires).

If it is a black stator with red/blue wires check the readings:
Test specs for the 90 hp are as follows :
Set OHM meter to R x 1000 scale
Disconnect blue and red wires from switchbox
Ohm Red to Blue wires , should read 3600 to 4200 OHMs
Ohm Red wire to engine ground , Should read 90 - 140 OHMs

Next test the trigger using white/black as ground , individually ohm the Purple , White and Brown all to the white/black wire , Should read 1100-1400 OHMS on each wire.

(steps/readings above taken from a previous Kend301 post)

Reminder: Never try to start the sportjet out of the water or without the flush kit on (sorry, not sure if the one that appears to be installed is good enough to start out of water). You'll blow the ride plate off and that's no fun (I learned the hard way!).

Make sure the spark plug has a good ground to check for spark...where it's at in the second picture doesn't look like it's grounded well.

Thanks for your reply, and thanks for the welcome... the little mermaid still has her head in place I think, but we have rented her out to the Chinese, so it's much easier for them to come and see her and shoot her with their video camera and stuff :)

Your responses on the engine sounds very interesting, so it's the first I'll try .. is it just an ordinary voltmeter I need or is there something I should be aware of? do not believe the old is good enough for this project .. hmm :-/

how do I ensure that there is ground enough?

I just found a perfect garage for the boat today, so now the project can begin, then - wish for me a lot of luck, and keep your fingers crossed :)

I'll keep posting updates with pictures to this thread

Generally I use a multi-meter. It has Volt, Ohms (Ω) and other functions.

There are tools for testing spark, such as an inline spark tester. It plugs into the spark plug boot then has a boot to go over the spark plug. I've also heard of people using heavy gauge household wire (bare copper) and wrapping it around the plug base and grounding it out, but I've never done that. Biggest thing is to try and keep it in contact with the engine block where there is no paint (bare metal) for a good ground. Good luck!

post any help you need , we will get her running like a top . Please read the sticky thread Sport Jet Basics and post the results of the tests and we can get started UMMMM... just looked at the pics , your best bet would be a CDM conversion kit , It will be much less than buying all the parts I know you will need , I can post part numbers and availability if you want to go this route , thinking it is somewhere around 700 for everything including harnesses .

Re: Sea rayder Sport jet 90 1995

Hi guys.

Just returned from my boat (it?s stored in a storage few miles from my place).

I am a bit confused. I don?t know which wires I must use to see if the startor works.
I have attracted some photos, hope you can push me in the correct direction

Kend301: please post the numbers, i can?t see other ways for me than go your route :)

Gonna start rounding up some part numbers , the CDM conversion kit part number is 835084a1 you will need to call mercury in Wisconsin at 920-929-5040 to get price and availability , the last time I checked the kit was around 700 dollars and has everything you need including new wire harnesses. I am also going to post ( tomorrow ) a parts combo that I know works that you can use with the stuff you already have but I suspect it will be more expensive. Also check your PM's as I am sending you a link for a site that shows all that is included in the cdm kit .

hi again..

Yesterday i installed the new red stator and the adaptorkit, and i got spark on all 3 plugs.. but i can't get the engine running.. the starter runs fine, and the engine sounds healthy, but it won't start.. did you guys have any idea what it could be? is there some kind of choke on these engines?
I wonder if my stator direction are wrong ?

Getting spark is the real battle on these engines , Yes there is a choke or an auto enricher , From what I can tell you have an eletric choke , the shaft on the back of the carbs , fuel line side , by the vent lines where they attach to the air box is your choke linkage and yes you must choke the motor to get it started cold . See if the ignition key pushes in while in the switch , if so that is how you activate the choke . You should be able to hear them click closed .

Re: push to choke on sport jet

YEAHHHH I've got her running.. have tried a couple of testruns, and the engine sounds healthy and got a lot of power.. Thanks a lot to everyone who came with input inhere!!!!

my only problem left, is the "push to choke" function... i can't do both, i am only able to either push or turn key (without pushing) i think it's a wire problem, does anybody know wich wire (colour) from the key switch, generete power to the choke??
the key switch is new, so that is'nt the problem..
