First off, sorry about all the questions...

I hope I am in the correct forum, my son of 17 wants to buy a 1994 14 foot sea ray .. sea rayder with a 90 hp sport jet, is this boat safe? Is it easy to swamp or flip?, one of my friends told me that he remembers someone telling him that if your at full throttle and let off the throttle to fast water will come over the back of the boat, is this true ? also a faster boat passing you there wake can turn this boat over or swamp it even hitting there wake straight on is this true ?will this boat sink if swamped? My son is a smart kid but I still have to worry a little !

Thanks in advance

Re: Sea Rayder safety question

You dont need to worry about this boat, it is pretty darn safe.

I have taken mine out in 1-2 chop in the bay, no problems.

Really, I dont think you have anything to worry about. The top speed of this boat is 40 mph and that is with a tailwind. Usually you are lucky to get 35 mph.

Now, the 90 HP sport jet engine may give him some problems. They have ignition problems, but if he can turn wrenches, they are pretty easy to fix. Parts arent that expensive.

Ken

Ken,

I was thinking of getting one or a similiar jet boat with the 90 merc-- What do I need to look for in a used one? Are these bad on gas?

Any advice would be appreciated

It is kinda a gas hog, depends on how you run it. Think of a 90 hp outboard motor gas use, and then add about 30% more.

Ignition systems can give you problems. The stators are known to fail, and the ignition boxes are too.

But they are really easy to fix. Click on my homepage (icon above) and it will give ya more info.

Ken

Re: Sea Rayder safety question

If you find a newer one with the CDM ignition then you won't have any problems except with the rev limiter. Them things eat rev limiters. Got both the 90 and a Limited Edition Rayder with the 120. Putting two pistons in the 120 now due to the oil pump screws backing out. Gotta use threadlock on them things. Biggest thing is the wear on the jet. I've got a spare pump and working on reducing the gap between the impeller and the wear ring. Guess I'm gonna find out how durable Marine Tex is. Got it down to .010 so far and is probably the best I can do. The spare pump works as a jig without having to break either of the boats down.
