Are Sea Rays really the Cadillacs of boats?

I'm new to boating. Looking for my first. I'm starting to hear a regular refrain: Avoid certain brands, like Bayliners. Embrace others, like Sea Rays.

Like in the automotive world--where you have Ford or Pontiac haters versus Oldsmobile or Buick lovers--I suspect that most people base their loyalty on personal experience rather than a more objective examination of the facts.

What do you think? Is there a hands down quality-of-construction winner in the Cuddy or Cabin Cruiser world?

Re: Sea Ray--the Cadillac of Boats!

Searay boats are built by the same company as bayliner. Both are owned by brunswick boats. fit and finish is a little better on searay.

I think a brand like monterey is much better it is a smaller company with lower production numbers and they pay more attention to customer service. I have owned all three brands and would buy a monterey above the other two any day. The searay and bayliner brands since you mentioned those two are fine boats if they are taken care of just like any other boat.

bayliner is made by u.s. marine i believe. either way, a neglected sea ray or neglected bayliner are going to be the same. on the older boats, its all about how well taken care of they were. on the newer boats, sea ray does hold a really good rep. for quality and luxury.

i saw my first up-close monterey this season, it did look like a well designed, neat boat.

brunswick owns most of the boat brands in the us some brands like bayliner and maxum even come out of the same molds. here is a link that will show you all thier brands.

Check out Chaparral, Bryant, Regal, Crownline and Four Winns also, just to name a few. There are many, many good boats. Cobalt is pretty much the cream of the crop. Like somebody else said - a neglected premium brand may be a worse decision than a well-cared-for economy brand. Personally, I do not like Bayliner - no offense intended to all you Bayliner owners.

It is like buying house paint. there are ONLY!! three paint comany's in the US. But they name 40 diff. brand names. I think CARVER is the caddy of floating lumber.

Sea Ray is a great brand name. It will hold its resale value much longer than many others. By constrast its Brunswick sister line, Bayliner, is known as an entry-level boat that will depreciate faster.

The other great names that have been mentioned in this thread also tend to hold resale value. If I was buying a boat today I would see how the older versions compare in resale versus new.

Re: Sea Ray--the Cadillac of Boats!

Since this started with Bayliner and SeaRay, they both have a fiberglass hull, they both use Mercruiser power and drive systems and I feel the controls are the same, instruments probably the same so the main difference is in the eye of the beholder. Look at both, sea trial both the get the one that you like best, the same goes for all the other brands mentioned here. My preference is the SeaRay. I would say there are really no bad boats, bad dealers, poor maintenance on used and opinions that make some sound bad, most of the time it is not a bad boat.

Never cared much for Caddy's (the car, I like Sea Rays and a Sea Ray has a LOT more than better fit and finish over entry brands)... If money was no object, I'd buy a Cobalt, the Lexus of boats. (I know Lexus "ain't" American)

Re: Sea Ray--the Cadillac of Boats!

I'm new to boating also...

Went to my first boat show last spring. Went aboard many boats, but when I went aboard a Cobalt I was totally blown away!!!!!!!! Every detail on these boats are incredible! Including the price! Quality second to none! :D But after this summer spending a lot of time on our boat, figuring out our wants and needs, next season the wife and I will be upgrading, and most likely will be going for a used 220 Cobalt. No way we could ever afford a new one...

Chaparral, Bryant, Regal, Crownline and Four Winns are also possiblities, but I'm in love with Cobalt boats!

Re: Sea Ray--the Cadillac of Boats!

Lots of good info here. I just completed the process of buying a new boat and looked different manufacturers. I was in the market for a 24-26 foot vessel. Here are a few impressions from me. I also check resale values for the past 5 years. Mind you, this is JUST MY opinion and am not bashing any manufacturer. Your results my vary.

Note: I look at the bones of the vessel. I look closely at the stuff you don't normally look for, like how the fuel tank is mounted, how easy will it be to maintain (No one likes to pull an engine to change spark plugs). I poke a flashlight and mirror around areas most would never look at to see what kind of craftmanship is there. While I did not look at ALL the manufacturers, I looked at most major brands within a 50 mile area of Tampa. I was looking for something to use on the bay and trips down the Gulf, so I cannot answer for sport/wakeboard types. I also researched the different manufacturers/boats online first efore seeing them in person.

Cobalt: Like stated before, cream of the crop. Lot's of bells and toys, top of the line materials. Higher prices than the rest. This would be the "Caddy of the crop". Lots of useful things, but some things you would not really need. I did not sea trial one, but have been in one a few years ago. I remember it being rock solid. Resale value seems strong, even from 1st year.

Chaparral: Also top of the line. Excellent quality. Very nice cockpit layout and materials. Manufacturing company very interested in customer service (I had the son of the founder call me on his cell phone to answer questions I had). Things like cup holders that drain to the outside of the boat, a deck drain systen that drains to the outside, not the bilge, etc. are great touches. Ride and response excellent. Jumped on a plane quick and seemed to be traveling slower than it actually was. Took waves/wakes like nothing. Resale value strong, but first year depreciation seems steep. After year one, hold strong.

Sea Ray: Well made solid boat. Lots of nice stuff. Strong customer service. It appeared to be priced a higher than it should be, and they would not budge that much on price. Nice ride and response in the bowrider tested. Took time to plane. Resale value really takes a nose dive within the first 5 years.

Monterey: Seemed like a decent boat, but I saw a lot of build problems. Loose parts, screws pulling out of the fiberglass (I saw this on multiple boats built by them). Interior quality OK, but not impressive. Ride and response good, but a little sloppy. Price seemed to be in the right area for what you get. Rode good, but a little rough. Seemed a little "loose" when hitting waves and such. Resale value better than Sea Ray, but still steep.

Regal: See Monterey. Non impressive build quality, and priced a little high for what you get. Did not sea trial. Resale value drop average.

Four Winns: Comp to Regal in all areas.

Rinker: Impressive vessel. Quality built. Great interior, but not as nice as Sea Ray or Chaparral. Priced below Sea Ray, so you get a great boat for good money. Ride and response better than average. Resale value better than Sea Ray, but not as great as Chap. Resale value drop better than Sea Ray.

Bayliner: Better than the bad reputation they got in the past, but still a cheap (no, economy) boat. Will do fine for the money, but interior is subpar, and hull seems cheap. In fact, the entire line of boats I looked at seemed cheaply built compared to the rest. Sea trial showed a loose noisy ride and I felt most waves and bumps. For a first time boat owner, could be worth it. Resale value steep drop.

Stingray: see Bayliner.

Tahoe: Bass Pro cheap *** boat. Enough said.

I ended up buying a Chaparral. I bought a left over 2007 255 SSi (You will be surprised how many different dealers have unsold 2 year old boats)and just could not beat the price. I got a vessel that rides great, is built right, and I can maintain without too many issues. I am not going to say what I paid, but it was far less than NADA value for a used one, and I got a trailer included. The full factory warranty is intact like any new vessel.

I could not afford a Cobalt so it was out. Sea Ray was nice, but they were proud of their prices, and did not offer a cuddy. Out of all of them, it was between the Chap, Rinker and Monterey. The others in my opinion were not built well enough for the money.

With the economy like it is, boat sales are down. Dealers are hurting and have to move inventory. You can get into a great boat for a lot less than you could a few years ago. Just take your time and don't get pressured. Let the salesmen know you are interested, but you are the one in control. It took about 4 months for me to go from starting to look to actually bringing it home. (Well, I actually take delivery next week).

Fix, you are going to love your Chaparral, I purchased a 2006 204SSi last winter and it has been an awesome boat. You are right that it is a great time to buy a new boat as I paid a touch over half what the boat originally sold for 2 years prior with 40 hours on it when I picked it up.

SEaRay had problems with there core material.

Do a search and find post on Searay's breaking apart in storms as opposed to other boats that were just damaged it's on here.

I would buy one!

Re: Sea Ray--the Cadillac of Boats!

fixb52s post contains lots of good comparative info. I have never looked THAT closely, but from shows and many rides on various brand boats I tend to agree with most of his reviews.

One thing though....you can't compare "loose" ride, "took time to plane", etc. unless you provide the engine and drive info. Obviously, a 24-26 foot cabin boat with a 260hp engine and alpha one rides worse and planes much slower than the same boat with a 370 hp and bravo 3 drive (or the VP equivalents).

If you plan to keep the boat a lobng time then build quality can = costs for repair of stuff that falls apart. However, the biggest maintenance costs will usually be the engines/drives which are the same for the most part (yes, some offer only Mercruiser or VP, but many offer both). Resale value very important if you plan to sell or trade within 5-7 years.

Sea Rays and Cadillac (GM) is a good comparison. But if you want to know a difference in real quality take a look at Contenders, Intrepids, Grady White, Boston Whalers, Black Fins, Cabos, Vikings and compare. Quality is in design, construction and factory backing. If you don't see and know the difference & you don't demand much from your boat, then you'll probably be happy with the Sea Rays, Bayliners, Larsons, Thompsons, Crownlines, Cobalts. At least for a while.

Re: Sea Ray--the Cadillac of Boats!

If you want to get a well constructed top of the line boat look at a Tiara. Top of the line interior, excellent fit and finish, and a great hull. I just bought a 1986 Wellcraft 250 offshore that i am very impressed with so far, a tough heavy hull, good hardware, and good fit and finish. Another good choice is Grady White, my last boat was a Grady and it was 24 yrs. old when i sold it and it looked better than some of the 9 yr old boats out there. No stress cracks, no broken hardware, and the original guages worked. You get what you pay for. The Searay that i had was a good boat but not as good as the boats i mentioned above. Just my .02 worth
