I am looking at buying a Sea Ray 240srv that has no motor or outdrive. It is going to be very expensive to replace both. I have heard of mounts you can get to mount outboards where they were not designed to be. I dont need much speed. I am just going to be fishing in it. Is it an expensive system to get? Can it be undone? I would like to replace the outdrive and motor eventualy. Advice please!
Jason

Re: Sea Ray 240SRV conversion to outboard?

Hi Toyman, I had a Searay 240 weekender with twin mercruiser 165's. It was a heavy boat, took a lot of power to get up on plane. Running on one engine was vastly underpowered for any use. I would think that any outboard under 200 hp wouldnt cut it. Putting that much torque and power on a rebuilt or modified transom seems risky. Why not try to find a rebuildable i/o. I found some boats at auction with wrecked hulls, but rebuildable engines and drives, they went for a song. However I could not figure an easy or cheap way to dispose of the hulls after stripping out the motors.

Toyman, I am in the process of repowering a 23 Grady that had an I/O. I have ordered an outboard motor bracket from Armstrong Nautical. They are very helpful in answering your questions about repowering your boat. You can also visit their website at armstrongnautical.com, it will answer alot of questions for you. A single bracket will cost around $800 plus installation.Good Luck, Steve

Re: Sea Ray 240SRV conversion to outboard?

Toyman,
The older Searays were 'Blown' Boats not Hand layed so they required much more resin to equal the strength of a Hand layed boat. Resin is heavy. These older Searays are substantially heavier then a boat of equal size. Yes they do sell transom brackets but can you get an outboard any cheaper then a new I/O setup? They are about equal last time I compared.
Also; most transom brackets hang off the transom about 2-3feet causing the engine to sit way behind the transom. The problem with this is that the boat will ride extremely bow high, because of the distance the bracket added there is no hull pushing the boat down. Some of these brackets do have an artificial hull to help this problem.

Re: Sea Ray 240SRV conversion to outboard?

Thank you very much for your advice. I am gonna try to find a junker to salvage the motor and leg from. I am moving to the coast in a month so I guess I will have alot more selection (I will be 30 mins from vancouver) I am worried about fuel economy as I want to use if for fishing.

Any idea on trolling and cruising GPH estimates? I will be looking for a 230 hp gm 350 and an alpha 1 leg.

I dont need alot of speed. I am more worried about economy. Will a small block 8 get me up on plane with a 24' sea ray?

Thanks again

Jason
