For a family of 5, would use it to spent some time in the ocean and some wake-boarding.
Would like to know of experiences with this boat, what to take care of, to look for, etc...

Sea Rays are good boats. Good 'n' nice. Like all boats, keep them covered and don't go drilling into the structure and introducing problems.

The issue is caring for the engine, exhaust and the outdrive. So, what kind of engine and drive combo is she wearing?

Where do you boat?

Deck boat + ocean raises some red flags for me.

Most families sit on the beach and see boats go by and they want to do that. My experience is that most families won't bother going into the ocean. Looks nice until you see the inlets!

But the Sea Ray is big enough to cruise along the coast and wave at people on shore. Best suited for the ocean? Nope.

Thanks Philster & Ezmobee,
When referring to riding in the ocean i actually meant along the coastline, I don't think I will de driving more than 2-3 hours in any direction. The idea is to change spots where to lay anchor and spent the day with the family, swimming, non-serious fishing, and the eventual ski, wakeboard.
Motor is Mercruiser 350 MAG MPI.

Why the concern with sun deck + ocean?

the 24 da is a great boat.

this is a link to our sea ray forum...

http://forums.iboats.com/Sea_Ray_Boats?boatid=212

read what other owners say about the boats.

keep in mind that the boats by manufacturer dont move as fast as our main forums......so check the date of the thread before you re post.
you could be asking a question on a 3 year old thread !

My Daughter owned one and we went on the ocean many times and never had a problem. We would go in the area of the bridge with a name like sky something or other, it was a hugh bridge and then over to an island.
That is a great boat, you can't go wrong.

You can go into the ocean in anything you want; the iboats members generally don't endorse it unless you are an experienced captain and if the boat has self bailing decks.

Boats sink in the ocean, often close to shore. One wave can overwhelm a bilge pump, thus the need for self-bailing decks.

Downside of anecdotal evidence, lakegeorge: I've got a couple of drunk neighbors that ain't killed themselves yet driving home from the bar at 2am drunk off their buttocks.

Be aware that SeaRay Sundecks have a higher degree deadrise than most "deckboats". Decent ride in rough water ;)

Meh.

Merely asking about a boat that is good in the ocean disqualifies one from going into the ocean.

I don't know about that, but if you were referring to my post I was only noting that the typical harsh ride associated with most "deck boats" is not present with SeaRay Sundecks. That doesn't change the safety issues that are added with bowriders and definitely says nothing about experience.

I have a friend that had a 240SD, it is a great boat, it also has a deeper draft than others both slightly larger and smaller. It will handle fairly rough water, the problem with any open bow boat and the ocean is one wave can put more water in the boat if you stuff the bow into a wave than the bildge pump can remove before the boat sinks. These boats do not have any way for the water to get out other than the bildge pump. Boats made for the ocean have ways for the water that may come in to get out quickly. You can go out in the ocean on a good day but you have to be sure the weather will stay good.

I know from experience that two bow waves from a freighter will put a bunch of water in the boat when you stuff it into the second wave, however the boat didnt sink (most of the stuff on board was floating for a few minutes, however the boat didnt sink).

the 240 sundeck is a great boat, especially if you buzzing up and down the intercoastal. I wouldnt take it out in anything greater than 3' swells though. The family will get a bit tense.

exactly where I stuffed the boat watching dolphins in the bow wake of a freighter. however many times we ran up to Madeira Beach, or out to Eggmont, or down to Venice without a problem
