we just bought a 2005 200 sport with 5.0 and 125hrs on it under the impression that sea ray builds high quality boats. after a bit of deeper digging around I am concerned that we didn't buy the quality boat i thought we did. any thoughts on these? I had always heard thats sea rays were up there with crownlines and the like but that doesn't seem to be the consensus here.

SeaRay smaller boats are nothing special. I bought a Bayliner 195 in 2005 after looking at the SeaRay 190 Sport and deciding that the extra 5K got you some SeaRay badges and nothing else. That being said, if it has been taken care of then there is nothing at all wrong with it. Any 10 year old boat is going to have issues - screws come loose, defered maintenance stacks up.

What kind of issues are you having.

In the 18 to 22 ft. range of bowriders, you will find that Monterey and Chaparral (non entry level) boats are
built with more quality and a better bang for the buck. Would be nice to know what issues you have a beef with.....

Nothing wrong with Sea Ray. May not be a Cadillac outta' the box, but well cared for they're fine boats. In a 10 year old boat, it's all about condition. If it's in good shape, and you like it ... it's probably a good boat.

don't have any at the moment really. little slow on top end with the current prop, a 15'x16P aluminum 4 blade. not seeing more than 43mph with it. doesn't seem to overrev but i havent had it in calm water either. current thoughts are that A) either boat weighs too much or B) tach isn't real accurate. other than that its pretty clean. few small gelcoat cracks around bow eye and a couple other places where the windshield mounts but motor is spotless bilge is clean and it appears to be in great shape for a 10yr old boat. only 125hrs on it

What did you find with the "deeper digging" ? I would consider all of the boats mentioned (Sea Ray, Crownies, Monty's, Chappy) to be shades of gray differences in quality, but all quite decent.

Oh just seemed to find a bunch of bashing on sea Ray quality, suppose I probably could find the same on a lot of others as well. I tried to buy the best boat I could for the money

Don't get yourself trapped in a marine-inferiority-complex. Load your boat, get the wife and kids smiling and having fun and repeat to yourself:

"At least it's not powered by a Stringer like Southkogs. At least it's not powered by a Stringer like Southkogs. At least it's not powered by a Stringer like Southkogs. At least it's not powered by a Stringer like Southkogs. At least it's not powered by a Stringer like Southkogs ..."

Don't worry about every little thing you find online. Take care of your new boat and enjoy it.
