Hi all, could anyone help at all, I have a small collection of outboards and thats only because i like playing with engines and i go sailing weekends.
I have some outboards nothing special a seagull FVP, Anzani pilot, seabee 80cc J.A.P, 3hp seaking and a 5hp seaking.
Its the 5hp seaking, as for as i know its a basic CD-20 and its a 74GG so its a ward 1947, It runs sweet as a nut i can not find what i should look like when it was new, like decals and colour.
its red and silver not brown or green.
Thanks Keith.

Re: Sea King

the early sea kings where made by Gale so it would be similar to the Johnson and Evinrude. post your question over at AOMCI.org and they can help.

Re: Sea King

My first motor was a 5hp Sea King. It looked like a johnnyrude. It was blue with white trim. I'm afraid that's all I can remember though - it was 40 years ago.

Re: Sea King

Yep, the late 40's Sea Kings had a silver LU/leg and powerhead with red tank/recoil and cowls. The decals were different from year to year. In 51, they went to a real sharp blue/green mist color, standardized the decals and stuck with that for about 3 years...then another style/color change came along in 55. Watch the auction site, you'll see a fairly original late 40's 5hp Sea King show up there sooner or later.

Re: Sea King

That would be great if you could, i,am not in a rushed for one as it will not be used untill the summer, but if you come across one for a 5hp seaking that would be great.

Re: Sea King

The '47 Gale Sea King is a far cry from a CD-20. Better be looking for Gale parts, not Johnson parts. The Gale prop has holes in it for water pickup to force-feed the water pump ahead of it.

A 74GG is a gale but is not the engine the same as the cd-20?

Re: Sea King

Here is a 3hp Gale pump. 5hp is similar.
As for the other question, a '47 Gale is a direct drive motor, a CD has full gearshift. The motors are totally different. A '47 Gale has a totally different powerhead also, with a totally different carburetor. A '47 Gale shares magnetos with a '47 Johnson (not the CD), also recoil starters. Very little else is shared.

Now to be fair, there was an Evinrude model that was similar.

Re: Sea King

Thanks for the info its only what i have picked up on the net, I have a 3hp seaking and that prop is damaged also but thats B.E.R.
but i would like the 5hp finished.
Give me a Seagull ,Anzani or Sea bee(uk one) i have them all and rebuilt all three but never seen a seaking before.
I do like to find out all i can, but sometimes you do not get the right info, and i would rather be put right by someone who knows.
And the picture of the prop is right and it has the holes. Same as this one.

Re: Sea King

I had the 5hp seaking running in the tank last weekend and it pumped water very well, just hope i put the holes in the right place when i replaced one of the gaskets, it was running a bit lumpy on the lower rpm's.
Is there a better way to get the timing right, or is it 020" and thats it?
One thing a stud snaped when putting engine onto the leg, pulled it off to try and re-tap but all that was in the hole was rust, the stud had rusted away from the inside, no tapping to do just replace the stud with a new one.
