I have an older boat, when I pull it out of the lake I am getting a grayish colored fluid coming out of the drain hole on the lower end. It smells like gas and I am going threw fuel like crazy, in a short time yesterday I burned 4 gallons of gas, heck my suburban does better than this... I know Sea King and Johnson have similar parts because I have a 50 hp and 80 hp Johnson I am using for parts... My question is why would it be burning this much gas, or leaking it and can I get a carb kit for a Johnson to rebuild the carb on the Sea King? Or should I rebuild one of the other carbs and put it on the Sea King. Also I tried swaping lower ends on the 50 to the 60 Sea King and could not get it to go into forward. The model # of the Sea King is 008850A if anyone could help me date this motor that would be great. Thanks!

While burning 4 gallons in "a short time" isn't enough info for us to really tell if you are burning too much fuel, I can tell you that the 50s & 60s vintage OMC v4s use a great deal of fuel. They also bypass alot of it overboard, which is probably why you are smelling and seeing quite a bit of premix in the water.

What you are seeing may just be a "nature of the beast" situation.

You're going to use at least 6 gallons per hour with that motor. The grey goop is normal.
