Help! I have twin 1995 Mercruiser 5.7 liter Vdrive inboards with 570 hours. When in gear either in forward or reverse, the portside engine would make a scraping sound. Had a diver check the running gear and there wasn't anything wrapped around the shaft or prop. After not running the boat for a month, it was time to run the boat to it's winter storage marina. The scraping sound continued. Again, only in gear. Being careful not to run the engine above 1500 rpms, the scraping sound got louder after half an hour and then the portside engine stopped. After I arrived at the marina where the boat would be stored for winter, I cautiously restarted the engine (after checking all it's vital fluids) and it ran perfectly out of gear. I was afraid to put it in gear fearing further damage.

I have spoken to different marine mechanics and have gotten varying opinions: It could be the engine drive plate (won't require the engine and vdrive removal from the boat), the Vdrive may be shot (will require engine and Vdrive removal).

I understand they won't know until they do further testing, But I wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem?

Sincerely,

Ayuh,.....

From your discription,.... It sounds more like a Tranny problem than a Motor problem.....

Re: Scraping noise

Thanks, any idea what this would entail? Would the mechanic have to remove both engine and vdrive? I appreciate the feedback, I'm new to this site and so far, it has been extremely helpful.

Re: Scraping noise

Could be transmission. Check the fluid. Could be the through hull bearing on the prop shaft, Once the boat is dry docked, Keep the transmission in neutral and spin the starboard prop by hand (should be slightly tough to do) and then try the port side. See if there is associated noise. Have the mechanics put a caliper on the port shaft and see if it's bent (if in fact it is the bearing).
